Autumn Term – Week 5 Newsletter – 02nd October 2026

Year 6, what a fantastic first month!

What an amazing start to Year 6 we have had! The children have thrown themselves into their learning with enthusiasm, curiosity and determination, and it has been wonderful to see them settling into their new routines and embracing the challenges that come with being our oldest pupils.

In English, we have been developing our descriptive writing skills by creating our own fictional setting descriptions. We have been thinking carefully about how to use ambitious vocabulary, descriptive techniques and precise details to help our readers imagine the setting clearly. We have also been enjoying our class reading of Who Let the Gods Out? by Maz Evans. The children have been getting to know the characters and exploring the exciting world of the story while developing their comprehension and discussion skills.

Our Maths learning has given us plenty to think about! We have been revisiting and strengthening our understanding of place value, before moving on to rounding numbers and exploring negative numbers. We have also been working hard on column addition and subtraction, focusing on accuracy, mathematical reasoning and choosing efficient methods. It has been fantastic to see the children becoming increasingly confident when tackling more challenging calculations and questions.

Science has been particularly exciting as we have begun our new topic on electricity! The children have been investigating how electrical circuits work and have enjoyed making their own circuits and testing different components. We have also started exploring voltage, making predictions and discussing what happens when we change different parts of a circuit. There have been plenty of opportunities for practical investigation and scientific thinking! Please see below for our science learning in action.

Our Topic lessons have taken us back thousands of years as we have begun exploring the fascinating world of Ancient Greece. We have been investigating the life and achievements of Alexander the Great, considering his impact and the vast area of the ancient world that he came to rule. We have also been discovering that life was very different depending on which Greek city-state you lived in. We have explored how education varied between different city-states, comparing what children might have learned and how their education reflected the values of their society. It has been a brilliant first month, packed with curiosity, creativity, practical learning and plenty of new discoveries. We are incredibly proud of the way Year 6 have begun the year and cannot wait to see what the rest of the term brings!

Autumn Term – Week 3 Newsletter – 18th September 2026

Year Six have embraced the challenges and expectations that we have placed upon them with enthusiasm and positivity. They have all worked diligently and tried hard to impress as they’ve adjusted to new routines and the year six curriculum. Mrs Jefferies and I have duly rewarded the cohort’s effort levels with positive praise and house points aplenty; half of our class received their Bronze awards this week. Let’s go Year 6! Like all classes we spent the first week reminding ourselves about the 3 Rs, being Ready, Respectful and Responsible whilst reminding ourselves about our school’s vision and values centred around ‘Building Bridges to a Brighter Future’. We focussed our learning on the concept of strong foundations and used that as a springboard into being respectful and showing kindness. Lots of outdoor learning, team building skills and plenty of fun had by all. Please find and enjoy some drama pictures below.

This past week has seen further expectations and routines embedded: Folk Music lesson with Ms Harris (Katie), Mandarin session, Rugby session with their new coach, Swimming at Southam and the introduction of their topic on Ancient Greece. The excitement has been palpable in year six after the much anticipated ‘Buddy-system’ became a reality and Year 6 were paired up – some trios – with their Cygnet buddies. This is always a wonderful part of the year and one that makes Cropredy such a special place. Year Six is such a pleasure to teach and the class are in for a spectacular year, however, crucially, this academic year will be characterised by rigour, hard work and progress across all areas of personal development as they prepare for secondary school…with a generous sprinkling of fun, laughter, teamwork and positivity thrown in for good measure! Please check our class page for our class timetable, letter to parents and curriculum overview.
