Autumn 1, Week 5 – 02.10.26

Another lovely couple of weeks here in Year 2!

On Friday 18th September, Year 2 celebrated the release of Gruffalo Granny with a wonderful afternoon at Forest School, filled with creativity, imagination and outdoor learning. The children had a fantastic time exploring the outdoors and taking part in a range of engaging activities. Please stroll down to see more information and photographs from the afternoon.

In Maths, we have continued our first unit on place value, where we have been learning how to plot numbers on a number line and compare and order numbers within 100. The children have enjoyed using a range of practical maths resources to deepen their understanding and build their conceptual knowledge.

In Humanities, we have had a very exciting couple of lessons exploring why the Great Fire of London spread so quickly. To bring our learning to life, we set fire to several model Tudor houses to recreate the conditions of the fire. We learned about the fire triangle, which represents the three elements needed for a fire to burn: heat, fuel and oxygen. We discussed how the hot, dry weather, strong winds, wooden houses with thatched roofs and narrow streets in London in 1666 all contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. We would like to thank Mrs Sabin for helping with the demonstration and Mr Watt for making the houses. Please stroll down to watch the video of the fire.

In Science, we are continuing to enjoy our unit on materials. This week, we have been focusing on material suitability, exploring why some materials are better suited to certain purposes than others. For example, we discussed how glass is a suitable material for windows because it is both waterproof and transparent.

In English, we have started our second unit of the year and have begun learning about the key features of a diary recount. To inspire our writing, we dressed up as Samuel Pepys, read an extract from his diary and then toured the school before recounting our experience. The children have enjoyed stepping into the shoes of a historical figure and using their experiences to develop their writing skills.

The Great Fire of London Demonstration – 28.09.26

On Monday 28th September, Year 2 took part in an exciting Great Fire of London mini demonstration. Making cross-curricular links between Forest School and our Humanities topic, the children explored why the Great Fire of London spread so quickly. We discussed how the fire started, the materials used to build houses at the time, and the narrow streets that allowed the flames to travel rapidly. The children also learned about the fire triangle, discovering that fire needs three key elements to burn: heat, fuel and oxygen. The afternoon was highly engaging and provided a memorable hands-on experience that helped deepen the children’s understanding of this important historical event.

Gruffalo Granny – 18.09.26

To celebrate the release of Gruffalo Granny, Year 2 enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at Forest School filled with creativity, imagination and outdoor learning. Mrs Sabin began the session by reading the story to the children, who were captivated by the latest adventure.

Inspired by the book, the children took part in a range of exciting activities. They created fantastic animal hats representing some of the characters from the story, designed and built cosy homes for Gruffalo Granny, and used natural materials to make a variety of foods and delicious soups for her to enjoy. The afternoon was full of enthusiasm, teamwork and imaginative play, making it a memorable way to celebrate the release of Gruffalo Granny. Year 2 had a fantastic time bringing the story to life in the great outdoors.

Autumn 1, Week 3 – 18.09.26

Year 2 have had a fantastic start to the new school year and have settled back into school life wonderfully! The children have quickly re-established their routines and are doing an excellent job of following our school rules by being ready, respectful and responsible every day. Mrs Smith and I have been incredibly impressed by their enthusiasm, positivity and eagerness to learn as we begin our exciting new topics.

In English, we have started our first book of the year, Vlad and the Great Fire of London. The children have been focusing on writing clear and coherent sentences to describe the fire, using ambitious adjectives and accurate past tense verbs. They have worked extremely hard and will be producing their first extended piece of writing next week, which I am very much looking forward to reading!

In Maths, we have begun our first unit on place value. We have been exploring how to partition two-digit numbers into tens and ones to develop a deeper understanding of number. The children have enjoyed using a range of practical resources, including Dienes blocks, place value charts and part-whole models, to support their learning and strengthen their understanding.

In Science, we have started our unit on Uses of Everyday Materials. The children enjoyed exploring the school grounds to identify different materials, learning the difference between materials and objects, and classifying materials as either natural or man-made.

In Humanities, we have put on our detective hats and begun investigating the Great Fire of London. Mrs Smith and I have been blown away by the children’s enthusiasm for this topic. We have explored how the fire started through our history lessons and investigated how the River Cherwell connects to the River Thames in geography.
