Our week of learning

Spring 2 – Week 4 – 21.3.25

We’ve had a very busy couple of weeks in Year 2!

In English the children have completed their work based on the story “The Legend of Black Rock.” We’ve now moved onto a new text “Meet the oceans”. This week we’ve been looking at the features of non-fiction texts as well as exploring fact files. On Wednesday, every child joined in with a group presentation to the rest of the class. We were so impressed by how clearly and confidently they spoke. Super teamwork organising themselves within their groups too.

In Maths we have moved on a new unit – Mass, capacity and temperature. The children have shown a great understanding of working with different units of measure and have enjoyed lots of problem-solving tasks this week.

In computing we have continued our unit on questioning, this week using 2Question to help us find answers to some puzzles using a binary tree. As always, we’re really impressed with the children’s resilience and determination when faced with a new challenge. It’s great to see them working together and trying new things.

In PSHE we’ve been thinking about making healthy choices and what this looks like at mealtimes. We had a look at foods we like to eat and which food groups they belonged to. We considered some small changes we could make to ensure we are eating a balanced diet.

We had a fabulous time at the dance and gymnastics festival at Chenderit this week. The children learnt lots of skills and they greatly enjoyed using the gymnastic apparatus such as the low beam and the small trampoline. The children also loved developing their moves when lead by the sports leaders and had great fun learning new dance routines.

Spring 1 – Week 6 – 14.2.25

Year 2 have had a very busy week!

In English they have been editing and writing up their rhyming poetry which relates to our story text. We discovered that some colour words are very tricky to rhyme with!

In Maths we have continued our work on multiplication and division, developing a range of ways in which to solve problems.

In Science we have been finding out about germs and how important it is to keep ourselves clean to avoid spreading germs. We used glitter to investigate the most effective ways to clean our hands. The children worked very well in their groups, using skills we have been developing in our PSHE lessons; helping us to work well with others.

In RE we have been thinking about important qualities that leaders need. We have discussed reasons why we follow leaders and that we can make our own decisions about who we follow. The children were amazing at ranking qualities of leaders from most important to least important. They had excellent ideas with most thinking that a good leader is kind, generous and a good listener. I was very impressed!

We had a lovely visit from Year 4 who came and shared their poetry with us. The children loved seeing poetry written by another class.

The children have certainly worked their socks off this week and are ready for their well-deserved half term break! Well done Year 2!

Spring 1 – Week 4 – 31.1.25

In English we’ve been working on writing instructions. When reading “Lost and Found” the children were surprised how unprepared The Boy was for his journey to the South Pole! To help him, they’ve used all their knowledge of instruction writing to let him know how to get ready for his journey. It’s been fantastic to see the children continuing to develop their use of interesting vocabulary and ensuring they are including the key features of the text in their own writing.

In Maths we’ve had an exciting week introducing the multiplication sign. Year 2 have really impressed us with their understanding of multiplication. We’ve been speaking about how useful it is to know your times tables – how many areas of Maths we use them for – and a reminder to keep using NumBots to support them at home.

In Science we’ve been thinking about what animals, including humans, need for survival. The children produced some fantastic information leaflets to explain how to look after their chosen animal. They showed a great understanding of the things that are essential for survival and those that are just nice to have.

In Humanities we’ve been digging deeper into our Great Explorers topic. This week we’ve been finding out about Christopher Columbus and what he did that made him such a significant person in history.

In PE we’ve been working on our skipping skills as part of our Fitness unit. This is a skill many of the children have found challenging and we’ve been so impressed by the determination and resilience they’ve shown in our lessons.

Spring 1 – Week 2 – 17/1/25

Year 2 have settled back into school brilliantly following the Christmas break. They are focused, working hard and embracing all the exciting new topics with lots of enthusiasm as always!

In English we have been working on writing newspaper articles based on the story Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. We’ve seen some fantastic examples of writing including some exciting vocabulary choices and excellent description.

In Maths Year 2 have been working hard on our money unit. They’ve been recapping the value of coins and notes as well as finding equal amounts and calculating with money. We’ve been so impressed how much they have remembered from Year 1.

We’ve made a start on our new humanities topic “Great explorers” and spent some time looking at significant people in history and why they important. In PSHE we’ve been setting goals for ourselves as well as thinking about our achievements and how they made us feel.
